WHERE WE GO AND WHAT WE SEE

a boat trip with an added bonus that you get to see things under the water too!

Loch Gairloch is an amazing sea loch, which has really been helped by a 30 year ban on trawling and dredging. The sea floor is pristine and serves as a nursery for the many varieties of plant and animals that live here including starfish, crabs including brown, velvet shore and hermit crabs, sea urchins, fish and an amazing array of kelps.

The highlight for many is our resident seal population (called a ‘Bob’), and we would normally expect to see  grey and common seals either hauled out or in the water. Birdlife is prolific, and during the warmer months – May to September – will often include the auks; black and common guillemot and razorbill in particular with an occasional puffin. Oyster catcher, eider, greylag, terns, curlew, turnstone, redshank and merganser are all regular visitors.

Rarer sightings include harbour porpoise, sea eagle and otter but do NOT choose this trip if you have your heart set on whales and dolphins – there are other operators on the pier who will take you further afield – and one of their tours is highly recommended. Please ask us about it.

A typical route

Our trip lasts around 90 minutes, and typically visits the 3 islands of Eilean Fraoch,  An t’Sabhail and Shieldaig which are great places to see birds, underwater life and seals.

SAFETY FIRST

We are fully committed to your safety. The boat is safety coded and registered for trips of up to 20 miles – far more than we need!

We carry full safety equipment including lifejackets, life-raft and flares, two VHF Radios, a GPS plotter and depth sounder and remember she was designed as a lifeboat! She has a nice deep safe cockpit with seats for everyone. We promise you’ll feel very safe in her.

Safety First!

AT A GLANCE

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT – AND WHAT YOU SHOULDN’T!

Well, Wester Ross weather is nothing if it’s not unpredictable! But we have a roof, so we can be sure to offer you a comfortable 90 minutes aboard Alice, an ex-P&O lifeboat. Each seat has its own viewing window and we supply basic binoculars.

We have warm waterproofs if you’ve forgotten yours, and child and adult buoyancy aids. These are not legally required – we carry lifejackets on board – but if you feel more comfortable why not?

We try to keep you entertained for the whole trip with local tales and information, help identifying the animals and plants we see and occasionally a surprise or two on the way in. One of the grey seals visits during the summer months, and sometimes we get to hand feed her fresh fish. Have a look at the gallery

Oh, and don’t tell the kids, but usually they get a shot at steering Alice on the trip 😉
